Most people (cops) who love doughnuts are willing to spend the
money to go to a shop (Dunkin' Donuts) that bakes them fresh or buy
a box in a store. Why? Because making them the traditional way seems
too complex. Even for those who know how do not have the time to
prepare this item. There is an easy way that anyone can make
delicious doughnuts without having to be a master baker. The secret
is in your tube of biscuits.
If you go to the store you will see all kinds of plain uncooked
biscuits in tubes that you are supposed to use to put in your oven
to make fresh hot biscuits. Those same biscuits can be used to make
the easiest and most delicious doughnuts you have tasted. There are
many varieties you can use to make each batch different, but once
you get the basic idea, you can play around with the suggestions to
create the doughnut of your dreams.
Here is the basic recipe for the easy doughnut:
1 tube of biscuits (Pillsbury, Hungry Jack, store generic)
1-1/2 cup of cooking oil (any oil will do, but will alter the flavor
with the different types)
In a frying pan, heat oil to boiling.
For doughnuts with holes in the center, puncture a hole and save
hole to make doughnut holes. For doughnuts that will have filling,
cut a hole in the side of the biscuit and expand a space inside. Or
you may just choose to leave the biscuit in tact.
Place biscuits in hot oil and fry each side for 30 seconds
(doughnut holes take only 30 seconds). Remove from hot oil and place
on a paper towel to absorb extra oil for about 10 seconds then
prepare in the way you like your doughnuts.
For simple doughnuts, doughnut holes and unaltered
biscuits:
Sprinkles - prepare a glaze that consists of 1/4 cup
vanilla frosting heated in a microwave oven on high for 25 seconds
and stir to keep the mixture smooth. In one bowl, put in 1 cup of
sprinkles and the other bowl will be the melted frosting. Cover
doughnuts in the melted frosting and quickly dip in sprinkles. Put
back on paper towel to dry for a minute.
Powdered - in a small bowl, put in 1 cup of powdered
sugar. Roll doughnuts or balls in powder and place on paper towel
for a minute.
Cinnamon - in a small bowl, put in 1 cup of powdered sugar
with 1 tablespoon of cinnamon. Roll doughnuts or balls in powder and
place on paper towel for a minute.
Glazed - using whatever you favorite flavor of cake
frosting, put about 1/2 cup in a microwave oven on high for 35
seconds and stir to keep the mixture smooth. Pour in a bowl that you
can dip your doughnuts or balls. Coat the doughnuts and let cool on
a paper towel for a minute. Glaze will harden.
Frosted - just use your favorite cake frosting and spread
on a cooled doughnut or hole.
For filled doughnuts:
Fruit filled - use your favorite jam or jelly and a turkey
baster or plastic sandwich baggy with a cut corner on the bottom.
Microwave the 1/2 cup jam or jelly on high for 15 seconds. Fill up
turkey baster or plastic baggy with your fruit filling. Squeeze in
the hole you made before you fried the doughnuts. Try to aim as far
down the back of your hole as possible and slowly pull it out as you
squeeze.
Cream filled - prepare instant pudding of your choice
according to the directions of using it for pie filling (it uses
less milk). Just as you would use the turkey baster or plastic baggy
for the jelly doughnuts, you do the same with the cream filling.
You can use the above suggestions for the simple doughnuts after
you fill the doughnuts to add a bit more of a doughnut experience to
these filled ones.
