TEST!!! Rootworm Pursuit

The search is on as seed companies hunt for new ways to fight corn rootworm. Here’s an update of their efforts. With a new Syngenta rootworm event pending approval by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Gary Prescher has a high interest in scouting for the pest. If EPA approvals come through, Syngenta’s rootworm hybrids will hit the market for 2007 in Syngenta’s NK, Garst and Golden Harvest brands.

The Western Corn Rootworm: On its Way to European Maize Fields

Already a widespread pest on American maize fields, the western corn rootworm has recently been on the move, making its way to cropland throughout Europe. In 2003, the US approved MON 863, a genetically modified maize line that produces a substance making it resistant to the corn rootworm. In January 2006, the EU followed suit by granting authorisation for MON 863 for food and feed. Some experts believe MON 863 maize would be a good solution to the increasing western corn rootworm problem in Europe. The approval process, however, has sparked disagreement between European authorities, environmental groups, and Monsanto, the company responsible for developing the resistant cultivar. Nonetheless, the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) came to the decision that the genetically modified maize is as safe as conventional maize.

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) will help seven countries in Central and Eastern Europe to control the spread of the Western Corn Rootworm, a major threat to corn production in the region. A US$ 2 260 000 regional project was signed today in Rome by the FAO Assistant Director-General for Technical Cooperation, Henri Carsalade, the Italian Director-General for Development Cooperation, Giuseppe Deodato, and representatives from the ministries of agriculture of the European countries.

TEST!!! Stowaway U.S. Corn Rootworm Eats Its Way Across Europe

As far as farmers in Yugoslavia are concerned, a tiny beetle known as the western corn rootworm is an unholy force of nature more devastating than a drought and fiendishly smarter than all of the smart bombs unleashed by NATO during the 1999 Kosovo war.
